Airs de cour are secular songs written for the entertainment of the king and his courtiers by the finest composers at the French court, all of whom were excellent singers. They appeared at the end of the 16th century and reached the height of their popularity during the reign of Louis XIII, becoming the most important form of vocal chamber music in France. Stephan van Dyck is a leading performer of this sophisticated and sometimes extravagantly ornamented repertoire.
